The Portuguese Bend Club in Rancho Palos Verdes began as a planned vision of a California beachside utopia. Kelvin Vanderlip, son of pioneering Palos Verdes Peninsula landowner and developer Frank Vanderlip, brought the idea into reality in the late 1940s. Sam Gnerre The development was owned and operated by the Vanderlip family's Palos Verdes Corporation. It consisted of privately owned homes stretching up a hillside from the ocean along Palos Verdes Drive South between present-day Terranea and the Trump National Golf Club.
