Rancho Palos Verdes was incorporated as a city in September 1973, thanks to the dedication of numerous residents. Three of those residents — Gordon Curtis, Dorothy LeConte and Fred Hesse Jr. — were honored five years later with the planting of the Fourth City Tree Grove at what was then known as Rancho Palos Verdes Park. A small tree was planted for each resident. And, now, decades later, the pines tower over a portion of what is now known as Robert E. Ryan Community Park. So it's only fitting that RPV will continue its yearlong 50th anniversary celebration with a community picnic near the grove from 10 a.
